Protection Dogs

 
Who would you prefer to protect your family?

*People who say “my dog just naturally protects” have opened themselves up to some serious liability issues. Those people generally have allowed their dogs to make their own decisions and as such the dogs will bite whom they have determined needs to be bitten regardless of what their owners think. This means kids and some adults that the dog thinks are being obnoxious, other animals, and anyone whom the dog feels is invading his territory which could be visiting in family members.

*Then there are people who bank on the fact that most dogs will bark and that is enough to scare a lot of people away. This is fine until you get a person like Fred the mail man who tells the dog to shut up and keeps coming. If the dog is actually brave enough to charge then Fred just simply swings his mail bag at the dog and chases the dog back. If the dog approaches friendly then Fred rewards with a cookie. The RoseHaven Kennel dogs wait for Fred and he simply hands them the mail which they promptly bring to us. Dogs are not stupid. They understand that people are bigger than them therefore they have to be taught that they can win a confrontation with a person. When that is taught improperly or unintentionally that opens up a large number of other training issues and liabilities.

*Just because you consider your dog “protection trained” doesn’t mean that you are protected. An unstable, weak-nerved dog will bite anyone, any time, out of fear, and all the training in the world won’t protect you from a law suit! Proper selection and training for both the handler and family is imperative and cutting corners must be avoided at all costs. A true protection dog is brave and strong enough to confront a person that shows no fear and at the same time the dog is handler sensitive enough to instantly obey the handler at all times. At RoseHaven we reserve the right to refuse some sales and have selection criteria for people who wish to purchase either training and or dogs.

*Also, training your dog to bite in drive mode and/or under certain circumstances means that you also have to make sure you can call your dog to you under extreme distraction AND you have to vigilantly make sure that those circumstances don’t happen “by accident” and your dog bites the wrong person! For example: if you train your dog to bite when the helper is raising and waving his/her arms and shouting, and you have a very animated neighbor that comes into your yard waving his arms to get your attention and yelling your name because something is wrong with your car, unless you can control your dog, you’ve got a dog bite problem on your hands and a very angry neighbor!

However, a personal protection dog with the right temperament that is correctly trained, with a correctly trained handler, can be a wonderful thing! The knowledge that your family is safe and secure because Fido knows what to do with a bad guy is priceless.
